Charity 24-hour Baton Relay hosted by York St John's Multi-sports team

Published: 18 July 2014

York St John University’s Multi-Sports team raised more than £350 for charity last weekend when they hosted a 24-hour baton relay.

They were raising funds for local charity SNAPPY (Special Needs Activities and Play Provision in York) and the challenge involved volunteers taking it in turns to take the baton on a two mile route around York. During the night time slots, volunteers continued to keep the baton moving by doing an indoor equivalent.

The event concluded on Saturday morning with participants from York St John’s Multi-Sports taking the baton to and from York Minster, accompanied by volunteers, parents and carers, GB Paralympian Craig McCann, mascots and Sam Orange,  a 1st team player from York City Knights.

The idea for the event came from Exercise Practice student Jack Bennett who has recently been awarded the Community Games ‘Shining Light’ award in recognition of his services to volunteering.

Jack volunteers with York St John’s  Inclusive Activity Club (YSJIAC) which works with students and members of the local community with various disabilities. One of the clubs areas of activity is Multi-sports which runs on campus every Saturday morning offering a range of sports for participants including Boccia, Tri-Golf, Table Tennis and cricket.
